Patch Essence is the resource used to gain Patch Levels on Heroes.  It's primarily earned from Franchise Trials, but can also be obtained in the game through some purchases and certain quest rewards.  There are five tiers of Patch Essence.  Each tier is used to unlock the corresponding tier of Patch Talent.
